Glaucoma is a degenerative eye disease that can cause blindness without warning or symptoms. A damaged optic nerve causes vision loss in glaucoma patients. It’s important to treat glaucoma immediately to prevent permanent vision loss. High eye pressure is frequently the cause of damage to the optic nerve and is the number one risk factor for glaucoma. Eye pressure increases when fluid builds up in the eye.
For glaucoma patients there are various treatment options including medications (eye drops), surgery and laser therapy such as Lumenis® SLT. This FDA-cleared laser therapy is used to lower eye pressure for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), the most common type of glaucoma. This in-office laser therapy uses light energy to reduce and control eye pressure. This treatment is beneficial for many glaucoma patients as it often provides long-term control and may reduce the need for regular eye drop medication.
