Welcome back to the newest installment in our ongoing Spotlight Eyecare Patient of the Month blog series. Here at Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons, we are always happy to present firsthand ophthalmology testimonials from our patients. Doing so not only allows our patients to tell their own personal stories, but also shows future patients of ours the level of care and professionalism they can count on from our medical team.
This month, we are spotlighting Ann, a patient who came to our office seeking guidance on whether or not she should undergo cataract surgery. After consulting with Dr. William Segal and hearing his recommendation for surgery, Ann agreed to go through with the procedure to correct her vision issues. We are happy to report the procedure was a complete success.
Keep reading to hear about Ann’s own words about her experience in our office and the impact it has made on her life:
I had an excellent experience with my cataract surgery performed by Dr. Segal. Everything was perfect from start to finish. I was very comfortable throughout the entire process. Dr. Segal made sure to explain everything to me carefully and make sure I felt at ease. After my experience, Dr. Segal is the only ophthalmologist I would ever use. In addition to my cataract surgery, several years ago he referred me (as a senior Adult) to a specialist who was able to correct my lazy eye, something that had plagued me for many years. Truly a life-altering decision. This was after I had been told by 2 or 3 other eye doctors that this surgery was not an option for adults my age. Dr. Segal is the BEST and his whole staff is wonderful as well.
It’s always so gratifying to hear such kind words from a patient. Before we sign off, we want to take a moment to thank Ann and all of our previous Spotlight Patients who have taken the time to share their personal stories with us. If you would like to share your story or book an appointment with our expert ophthalmologists, please contact Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons today. Welcome to the latest installment in our ongoing Spotlight Ophthalmology Patient of the Month series. While we typically use this space to discuss specific instances of how our eye care services have been able to positively impact the lives of our patients, the professionals here at Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons also care deeply about helping people improve their overall health and wellness. This was certainly true in the case of this month’s spotlight patient, William.
William is a retired former administrative school assistant and guidance counselor living with his wife in Dacula. He has been seeing Dr. William Segal for his eye care needs for nearly 20 years. Recently during a routine eye exam in our office, he mentioned to Dr. Segal that he had been very frustrated by trying to make an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine. Keep reading to hear from William himself on how Dr. Segal and our providers went the extra mile to help William get what he needed.
“I came to Dr. Segal for my routine eye exam and to discuss the occasional pressure that I experience in my eyes. Once we had completed the exam, we were making small talk and I mentioned that I was having real trouble finding a COVID-19 vaccine appointment. Dr. Segal took it upon himself to help me. He referred me to his nurse who shared with me their COVID-19 resources, including many locations that I didn’t know were even offering vaccinations. Before I knew it, I had an appointment for my first vaccination. I have now had both of my shots and am so thankful to Dr. Segal and his staff for assisting me. Over nearly 20 years, I have had nothing but positive experiences in that office. Dr. Segal is truly a holistic doctor who actually cares and it makes all the difference.”
For anyone else having a hard time booking a vaccine appointment, please visit our COVID-19 Resources page. We were so happy to be able to help William, with both his vision needs as well as his vaccination appointment, and we hope to be able to guide more patients to the assistance they need in the weeks and months to come. At Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons, we’ve been privileged to form meaningful relationships with a myriad of patients over the years. It’s difficult to express just how much we value these relationships, so when a patient reaches out to express their appreciation, we’re always eager to share their thoughts with our readers. Today, we’re excited to bring you another profile of one of Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons and Dr. William Segal’s wonderful patients: Judith.
Judith is a lively, independent retiree. She likes to spend her time going to the gym, doing Pilates, shopping for antiques, and generally being active. However, when she recently started to notice problems with her vision, Judith had to put her active lifestyle on hold. “About a year and a half ago,” she says, “I started noticing that things weren’t right. I’d never had to worry about vision, but everything looked dirty for some reason. So I went in to have my eyes checked, and as it turned out, I needed glasses for distance.” But that wasn’t all. Judith was also informed that she had cataracts, a treatable condition that can lead to complete vision loss.
Judith was not happy with the news, but as a hygiene-conscious and tidy person, she was at least grateful to learn that her floors and windows were not actually dirty. “The doctor said, if I were you, I’d stop driving at night,” remembers Judith. “But I was petrified to have surgery—I mean it’s my eye! Driving was becoming a big problem, seeing the television was getting harder—I kept cleaning the TV and my windshield every day, to no avail. And lights were so bright. I went into a store one time, and the light was so bright and blinding that I literally had to walk out of the store. There was no way I could see anything—and that was with sunglasses. So I finally decided I had to go through with the surgery, because I’m just too active to be limited like that.”
After receiving her diagnosis, Judith waited a while before making her appointment. Like many people who need eye surgery, she was nervous. However, she knew that cataract surgery was a pretty routine procedure for ophthalmologists, especially experienced ones. With this in mind, she hopped online and sought out an experienced eye surgeon whose patients seemed to like him. This led her to Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons, and we’re extremely gratified to hear that she’s more than happy with where her search brought her.
“I found Dr. Segal online,” says Judith, “and in all honesty, it was the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. The office is meticulously clean, and I’m a little bit of a germaphobe, so that really matters to me. His staff is absolutely lovely, and he’s very thorough. The surgery was miraculous. When I came home and turned on my bedroom light, I saw that my floor wasn’t dirty! I’ve got to tell you, it’s the best thing. He also put in a lens [an artificial intraocular lens or IOL] so I wouldn’t need glasses for distance anymore—and I can wear all my designer sunglasses again!”
Judith wants our readers’ main takeaway to be this: if you need cataract surgery, you should have cataract surgery. “It’s like a whole new world,” she says. “More people should know about cataracts—more people should think about getting the surgery. If I can help somebody make that decision, I’ll be happy. People should definitely find a surgeon with the latest technology if they can. I’m glad that [Dr. Segal] has the latest technology. He’s just wonderful, and there was no pain whatsoever with the laser he used.”
It’s incredibly fulfilling to hear patients describe their positive experiences with Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons. At Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons, we understand that eye surgery can be intimidating and even downright scary to some people. Although modern techniques and technology make eye surgery extremely safe and effective, people tend to feel that their eyes are particularly vulnerable. To be especially protective of your eyes is a reasonable, natural, and healthy impulse, so we admire patients who overcome their fears and put their trust in us. That’s why, for this month’s spotlight patient, we’re showcasing someone who did just that—and is now enjoying crystal-clear vision.
Penelope is a retired grandmother with two now-grown children. She’s been seeing Dr. William Segal and the rest of the Georgia Eye team since 2012, and today, she’s pleased to be able to call her vision “fantastic.” When she first started noticing issues with her eyesight, Penelope learned from another doctor that she had cataracts. However, before she was ready to decide on the proper course of treatment, Penelope’s doctor retired. Fortunately, her daughter-in-law had been to Dr. Segal and brought up Georgia Eye as a recommendation.
When Dr. Segal examined Penelope, he determined that cataract surgery and a multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implant would be the best treatment for her condition. Like many people who need eye surgery, Penelope was anxious about the procedure. “One thing I loved about Dr. Segal was that he didn’t put any pressure on me,” she says. “I was absolutely terrified, so I waited almost a year before I had the surgery. But I’m so glad I worked up the courage to do it. It worked out great!”
After removing Penelope’s cataracts, Dr. Segal used AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL implants to further improve her vision. Beyond simply fixing the cloudy vision caused by her cataracts, these IOLs helped improve Penelope’s overall vision. She was surprised by just how big of a difference the surgery and IOLs made, as well as how much easier the process was than she’d originally thought it’d be. “There was no pain whatsoever,” she says. “It was simple, I got great care, and I was just thrilled after the procedure. Medicine has come a long way!”
In addition to a laser procedure a few years after that initial surgery, Penelope has been having her routine and comprehensive medical eye exams at Georgia Eye since 2012. “I can’t imagine going anywhere else,” says Penelope. “I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Segal. He’s very thorough. He explains everything in plain English, then goes into great detail about it. And I’m glad he’s a young man, because that means I can keep going to him for a long time.”
It wasn’t just Dr. Segal who impressed Penelope. “Dr. Segal’s nurses were the best in the world,” she says. “They were very attentive, caring, funny—the whole operation was just amazing.” Thanks to cataract surgery and IOLs, Penelope can enjoy her hobbies and everyday life in ways she wouldn’t otherwise be able to. She has a deep appreciation for things that might be easy to take for granted, such as going to the ballet and Botanical Gardens, reading, and taking care of her cats. That last one is especially important to her—in some circles, Penelope is affectionately known as “the cat lady.”

At Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons, we know we wouldn’t be where we are without our patients. After all, having such amazing patients to care for inspires us to continuously challenge ourselves to provide the best care possible. We put our hearts and souls into what we do, and we’re incredibly excited when a patient wants to share their Georgia Eye experience. This month, we’re featuring a longtime patient of ours named Earline.
Earline’s big heart and positive attitude make her a pleasure to be around. Married for 51 years and counting, Earline is a lover of people—family, friends, and neighbors—and animals. “Dr. Segal knows I love animals,” she says. “I have 50 bird feeders in the back of my home, and I feed the deer who come through my backyard. We have eight new baby deer we’re watching grow up right now.” Earline loves to provide food for local animals, and she also fixes meals for her neighbors and friends who can’t do it for themselves.
Earline found out she had cataracts about twelve years ago. However, she decided to wait until her retirement eight years ago to have cataract surgery. Once her professional working life was behind her, Earline came to Georgia Eye Physicians & Surgeons to have cataract surgery with ReSTOR® intraocular lenses (IOLs). “God and Dr. Segal gave me brand new eyes,” says Earline. “I’m a diabetic and a cancer survivor, so my insurance company recommended I see an ophthalmologist. And I’m so glad I found Dr. Segal.”
We especially appreciate Earline’s kind words, as she’s not one to give praise unless she feels it’s well deserved. “I adore Dr. Segal,” she says. “I won’t give testimonials for a lot of people, but I will definitely give one for him. Because he’s wonderful. I’m very, very, very happy with the results of my surgery, and Dr. Segal deserves to win any kind of medical award there is. I had to wear glasses since age twelve, but I no longer have to, thanks to Dr. Segal’s work.”
Earline certainly has a soft spot for Dr. Segal, but she also expresses a strong affinity for the rest of the Georgia Eye team. “The wonderful staff never disappoints me,” she says. “They’re always super busy, but they always take the time to take care of me. I really appreciate that.” She also says that, when she needs eyecare in the future, there’s no other surgeon and team she’d rather put her trust in. “I would definitely have another procedure with Dr. Segal if I had to,” she says. “In fact, I had to have a minor procedure done after my cataract surgery, and I went to him for that.”
