With some LASIK patients, full vision correction may not be the final outcome of their initial LASIK surgery procedure and blurriness can occur even with 90% of vision restored. Full vision correction can be achieved with corrective eye glasses, contact lenses, or LASIK enhancement surgery. LASIK enhancement, also referred to as a “touch up,” is a secondary LASIK procedure option that can be performed to enhance overall patient satisfaction. LASIK enhancement can further improve vision in severe cases of farsightedness, nearsightedness or astigmatism which couldn’t be fully corrected with one surgery.
As the eyes heal, it can take several weeks or months to notice the full results of the initial LASIK surgery procedure. With frequent follow-up examinations, Dr. Segal is able to monitor the healing process and recommend LASIK enhancement for proper candidates. During a consultation, Dr. Segal will examine the eyes to determine if your vision is stable and if there is sufficient tissue remaining after the initial procedure to safely perform LASIK enhancement.
If LASIK enhancement is recommended, it is performed similarly to the initial LASIK surgery procedure and the technique used depends on the time that has lapsed. For patients receiving LASIK enhancement within six months to a few years of their first procedure, the same flap initially incised can often be used and no new incisions are required. After the procedure, patients are asked to attend routine follow-up examinations to monitor your healing process.
