When an eyelash follicle becomes infected it can cause the formation of a red, sore lump inside or near the edge of the eyelid, called a stye. Symptoms of styes include eyelid tenderness as well as itchiness, irritation and redness of the eye. It is important to avoid popping a stye as it can cause infection to spread into the eye itself and potentially damage vision. Using a warm compression cloth a few times a day helps to unclog the infected oil gland and allows for natural drainage. If the stye does not improve, an antibiotic ointment, steroid injection or surgery to remove the stye may be recommended.
